Easy Instant Pot Meat and Potato Hobo Foil Packets (Oven Instructions)
A classic hearty dinner made quick and easy. Instant Pot Meat and Potato Hobo Foil Packets are filled with burgers, potatoes, and carrots. Easily made it the Instant Pot with oven instructions too!
HOBO MEAL OR BAKE OUT
Heave you heard of these before? A classic Hobo-meal or Bake-out as we call them here at our house. It’s a delicious meal with only 3 ingredients and easily made for any weeknight dinner! They’re great to make for weeknight dinners when you’re short on time. So simple, yet very filling and a great hearty dinner to satisfy the hungriest!
HOW TO MAKE THESE HOBO FOIL PACKETS
Making these Instant Pot Meat and Potato Hobo Foil Packets is very simple.
- First, peel and cut the potatoes and carrots. Press the ground beef into even patties.
- Place the 4 pieces of tin foil (10-12” long) on the counter. On the center of the foil, place the pressed hamburger patty, then a handful of potatoes, and a handful of carrots. Season generously with sea salt and pepper.
- Fold the foil packets up by folding two ends up to meet each other, roll the top edge together. Then fold up the two ends. Continue this process for all 4 packets.
INSTANT POT INSTRUCTIONS
Now they’re ready for the Instant Pot.
- In the Instant Pot, place the trivet and one cup of water. Place the foil packets on the trivet, stacking one on top of the other.
- Press ‘Pressure Cook’ and manually adjust the time to 18 minutes. Turn the pressure valve to close and let cook.
- Once it’s done pressure cooking, release the pressure by opening the pressure valve (Caution, it will be very hot!). Remove the lid and carefully remove the meat and potato foil packets. Serve.
OVEN INSTRUCTIONS
Create the foil packets as instructed above.
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Place the foil packets on a baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes.
- Baking time will vary slightly depending on how large or small the potatoes were cut. At the 35 minute mark, pull the baking sheet from the oven and open a packet and test the potatoes by poking them with a fork to see if they’re soft enough. If additional baking time is needed, place back in the oven for 5-7 minutes. If they’re soft, serve the meat and potato packets!
- 1 lb ground beef
- 3 medium russet potatoes
- 3 medium carrots
- 4 10-12" pieces of tin foil
- sea salt and pepper to taste

Peel and cut the potatoes to 1 1/2 – 2" pieces. Peel and cut the carrots into 3-4" sticks. Press the ground beef into 4 even patties.
