Post Workout Superfood Smoothie Bowl has your recovery game covered. This bright green smoothie bowl is packed with nutrient dense ingredients like kale, mango, spinach, and coconut water. A couple of supplements that are easy to source are some of the best superfood supplements you can give your body to optimize your recovery. Whether you’re just getting back from lifting weights, running a few miles, working on your strength training, or are a busy mom that has been running around cleaning the house and doing laundry, this Post Workout Superfood Smoothie Bowl will nourish you!
I’m going to break down the ingredients in this smoothie bowl and talk about why I chose each one for this recipe. I used to just grab whichever frozen fruit and raw veggies and blend them up. After I started working out on a consistent basis and wanted to see more gains from all my hard work, I really started to pay close attention to each ingredient I was adding to my smoothies. Each ingredient in this Post Workout Superfood Smoothie Bowl adds flavor, but just as importantly it adds a huge amount of vitamins and minerals.
KALE:
I add 2-3 cups of kale to this recipe. It’s a little hard to measure exactly without breaking out the scale and weighing it. I just eyeball it and grab a couple of large handfuls which is about 3 cups of packed raw kale. If you’re new to kale, you may want to start with 2 cups and work your way up to the full 3 cups. Kale is considered a superfood! You can’t get much healthier than kale! It hosts:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin K
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin B6
- Magnanese
- Calcium (more than milk & spinach!!)
- Iron
- Copper
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Protein (6 oz per 3 oz of kale!!)
Kale with it’s superfood title boasts a great amount of antioxidants! Which is very important in ridding the body of the free radicals it naturally creates. Adding kale to your daily diet would be very beneficial. Grabbing a couple of handfuls for this Post Workout Superfood Smoothie Bowl is a very easy way to incorporate kale in the daily.
MANGOES
The one and only fruit in this smoothie bowl is frozen mango chunks. It adds a little sweetness to the smoothie and a whole lot of nutrients.
- Vitamin C
- B vitamins
- Vitamin A
- Fiber
- Folate
Mangoes, like kale, are packed with antioxidant boosting polyphenols. They’re great for your body! With the combination of vitamins, mangoes are a great immune boosting fruit for your body. And combined with kale, the vitamins in mangoes help your body absorb iron! I used to take iron supplements for some symptoms of low iron, and since incorporating this Post Workout Superfood Smoothie Bowl into my diet, I haven’t needed the extra iron supplements!!
SPINACH
Spinach is another superfood that adds sweetness to this smoothie bowl. Adding a nice heaping handful of spinach gives your smoothie bowl more:
- Protein
- Fiber
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin K
- Folic acid
- Iron
- Calcium
Spinach is so easy to source, it’s in every single grocery store I’ve visited! Just like the first two ingredients in this smoothie bowl, spinach is also a great source of antioxidants!! Love loading up on them to boost the body!
COCONUT WATER
The liquid I use for this smoothie bowl is coconut water. It’s easy to find in stores, and if you’re like me and live in a small town and can’t find it, it can easily be ordered from Amazon! But do me a favor (and your own body!) and READ THE INGREDIENT LIST!! The only ingredient that should be listed is “coconut water”. End of story. There are several out there with added sugar. Why? I have no idea…but you do not need the added sugar coconut water.
- Vitamin C
- Electrolytes
- Antioxidants
- Potassium
Coconut water is a fantastic liquid to use in smoothie bowls, especially after a hard workout as it’s full of electrolytes! Electrolytes replenish your body after pushing it hard in the gym. It’s also a great source of antioxidants.
SPIRULINA
Here’s a fun and colorful supplement! I’ve been adding one scoop of spirulina to my post workout smoothie bowls and it’s amazing. Spirulina is a blue-green algae and easily sourced. I bought mine on Amazon (see below). One small scoop goes a LONG way! Keep to the one scoop for this smoothie bowl, much more and you won’t like the taste. But don’t let that scare you away from trying this supplement! Spirulina hosts:
- 4g Protein
- B Vitamins
- Copper
- Iton
- Amino-acids
- Endurance enhancing
Spirulina is both antioxidant packed and is full of anti-inflammatory phycocyanin. With exercising you’re inducing oxidative stress (which is a good thing) and giving your body the nutrients and phycocyanin properties of spirulina you’re helping to minimize the oxidation and muscle fatigue that can occur in your workout.
COLLAGEN PEPTIDES
Post Workout Superfood Smoothie Bowl needs a good dose of protein to be the ultimate post-workout smoothie recipe. I have found adding collagen peptides gives it a healthy dose of protein and more benefits. We naturally have collagen, it’s the most abundant protein in our muscles, skin, and ligaments. But as we age our ability to produce collagen slows down. With workouts and daily wear and tear, we break the collagen down. Wrinkles and joint pain? Lack of collagen. Adding collagen peptides as a daily supplement is very beneficial whether you’re male or female, 20, 40 or 60 years old, active or inactive. Collagen supports:
- Joints, ligaments, tendons
- Skin, hair, and nails
- Builds muscle
- Gut health
For this Post Workout Supergreen Smoothie Bowl, I add collagen peptides for the joint & ligament support and to help build muscle. You’ve already put in the hard work at the gym to break down the muscle fibers so they can build back up stronger, now add this supplement that has glycine (an amino acid) that helps to synthesize creatine. It’s going to help grow muscle and give you more strength that you’ve been training for!

CREATINE
Creatine is an optional supplement I added to this recipe. It’s a great muscle growth supplement for post-workout. It hosts phosphocreatine which helps create energy-storing cells in the muscles. In adding one teaspoon per smoothie bowl it will help in creating muscle mass by boosting the formation of proteins in your muscles. It’s listed as optional in the recipe, but I highly recommend it. I personally use it after each workout as it supports:
- Muscle endurance
- Recovery
- Brain performance
- Sprint ability
- Strength
- 3 cups raw kale
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- 2 cups spinach leaves
- 8-10 oz coconut water
- 1 tsp spirulina
- 1-2 scoops collagen peptides
- 1 tsp creatine
-
Using a high-speed blender, place all ingredients in the blender. Cover and use the 'smoothie' setting or blend on high for 1-2 minutes. Stopping to scrape the sides as needed.
-
Pour smoothie into a large bowl. Serve immediately.
